THE JOY OF LEAN (E-BOOK). TRANSFORMING, LEADING, AND SUSTAINING A CULTURE OF ENGAGED TEAM PERFORMANCE
Has your organization tried Lean already? If so, you surely see and feel the Joy of Lean in your workplace now, right? Don’t worry. If you’re not quite to joy yet, you’re not alone. As it attracts more and more attention as a successful business philosophy that can improve results in any type of organization, lean has still sometimes been misunderstood as a method for just cutting expenses. The useful ideas of eliminating waste and driving greater efficiency can pick up a negative spin, with perceptions of job cuts, employees doing more with less, and managers squeezing more productivity from each person. None of that sounds very joyful. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This book will show leaders how to cultivate a positive Lean Culture of Excellence that creates value for customers, profitable growth for businesses, sustainable cost reduction, and fulfilling jobs for employees. Lean Culture means empowerment. Lean Culture means better value for the customer. Lean Culture means better performance for the organization. Lean Culture means a more engaging, rewarding, and yes, even joyful role for each employee. And Lean Culture provides the competitive advantages that a team needs to survive and grow. We call the approach Lean Engaged Team Performance (Lean ETP). It’s a purposeful combination of value innovation, process excellence, performance measures, team goals, collaborative norms, organizational structure, enabling technology, and most of all, visionary leadership. And it’s hard to achieve and even harder to sustain, but it’s worth the journey! Praise for The Joy of Lean “For a young growth company, the self-discipline of Engaged Team Performance and a commitment to process improvement do not initially sound too joyful. But all we needed was one team to try. Our leaders and employees came together… operating at the best service levels we had ever achieved.” Jana Schmidt, President and CEO, Ecova, Inc. “Life is supposed to be an adventure, and work is a core part of that journey. The Joy of Lean will help you develop a culture where everyone takes joy in coming to work every day to contribute something that will change the world for the better.” Dr. Fred Moll, co-founder and CEO, Auris Surgical Robotics, and co-founder of Intuitive Surgical “The Joy of Lean provides practical advice that every organization should follow when pursuing a Lean transformation. Dodd Starbird delivers the content in an easy to understand, even humorous way that makes this an important and enjoyable read for anyone, not just leaders for whom the book is most intended.” Drew Locher, author of Lean Office and Service Simplified “Dodd Starbird fixes the limitations of most Lean implementations by shifting focus from eliminating waste to achieving excellence – and it's spot on!” David Marquet, author of Turn the Ship Around! “At its heart The Joy of Lean is about leaders building relationships: relationships with your customer and with your employees. Engaged Team Performance is all about empowering your employees to demonstrate care while attracting new customers, strengthening client relationships, or delivering products and services every day. The Joy of Lean provides the key to any successful business.” Art Bacci, Head – Hong Kong Group, Principal International “Business, especially a growing business, is ultimately about people working with people. The Joy of Lean outlines key principles for driving a culture of business performance. Working with Dodd Starbird’s ETP principles, we have been able to deliver sustainable value to our business, and our teams remain engaged." Beth Rothwell, President, VfD Companies

THE AS9100C, AS9110, AND AS9120 HANDBOOK (E-BOOK). UNDERSTANDING AVIATION, SPACE, AND DEFENSE BEST PRACTICES
AS9100, AS9110, and AS9120, the quality management system (QMS) standards for the aerospace industry, are written in the most ambiguous language possible. Indeed, they don’t outline how they should be implemented. Those decisions are left to the organization implementing their requirements or, in some cases, to a consultant. Although some consultant firms for aerospace systems are excellent, there are many that purport to be experts yet proffer systems and processes that are either in contravention to the standards’ requirements or so unwieldy that they render the process impotent. In an effort to simplify these issues, this book proposes practices that have been described as opportunities for improvement or best practices by registration auditors in the past. It includes a discussion of each of the three standards’ clauses, suggests best practices to comply with them, outlines common findings associated with them, and provides an overview of the changes to AS9100C from AS9100B.

MAXIMIZING VALUE PROPOSITIONS TO INCREASE PROJECT SUCCESS RATES
Features Identifies key opportunities that can add value to an organization Focuses analysis on necessary data collection efforts Provides direction and motivation for the improvement process Details a method for continuous review of the improvement process Encourages timeliness through digital-setting and milestones Summary Value proposition, an old concept, is taking on new significance in today’s innovation-driven environment. Business focus has shifted from developing many creative ideas to developing only those that will successfully flow through the product cycle and fulfill a customer need. The old approach resulted in less than a 10 percent success rate for concepts that started through the product cycle; this can no longer be tolerated. This new book on value propositions outlines a systematic approach to making an early evaluation of potential projects and programs so you can determine if they can add real value to your organization or its customers—potentially saving you millions of dollars and months of valuable time. Focusing on the necessary data collection efforts, Maximizing Value Propositions to Increase Project Success Rates will help you identify easy opportunities for improvement and will guide you through the process of creating value propositions for the ideas that will drive the organization’s future profits. It outlines a four-stage approach to creating value propositions and explains how to create effective value proposition documents. The book illustrates the role of the opportunity center in capturing new ideas, describes how to present value propositions to management, and includes an example of a new product value proposition. Detailing a method for continuous review of the improvement process, it will help you foster an entrepreneurial mind-set within your employees and encourage them to actively search and document value-adding ideas. Through the effective use of value propositions it is completely possible for your organization to increase the number of new products/services it offers to your customers by over 100 percent. It is not unusual for this to result in more than a 40 percent increase in profits per year. Adopting the approach outlined in the text for using value propositions can save your organizations millions of dollars and much time. What could be better than reducing costs while increasing sales?
THE TEAM EFFECTIVENESS SURVEY WORKBOOK
Virtually every type and size of organization commits substantial resources to team-based initiatives. While there are many different names applied to these teams (corrective action teams, project teams, quality improvement teams, as well as method-specific teams such as Six Sigma, lean, quality function deployment, strategy deployment teams, and so on.), their purpose is similar: Improve organization quality, performance, productivity, and effectiveness. But the reasons why these team activities and programs sometimes fail aren’t always obvious to team members, leaders, and upper management. This is because there is no system in place to measure what is actually occurring. The Team Effectiveness Survey Workbook helps identify these reasons by teaching readers how to: develop survey objectives; prepare your survey questionnaire; create a survey code structure for summarizing the results; administer the survey; process the survey results; and analyze and feed back the survey results. It contains over 500 different questions divided into 28 categories to help create survey questionnaires to meet the reader’s specific information needs.Throughout the workbook, you will find sample questionnaires, answer sheets, code structures, and more, along with examples and forms to aid in constructing a survey. Also included is a Team Effectiveness Toolkit CD-ROM containing all of the survey questions in their appropriate categories, the sample Team Effectiveness questionnaires, and all of the survey support materials. The workbook has been developed for use by internal and external resource persons/consultants who are responsible for team development/implementation activities, and also team leaders and members involved in team-based initiatives. JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE. HOW BALDRIGE HEALTH CARE LEADERS SUCCEED
This book is based on several years study of the nine Baldrige Award winners from health care. It describes how these organizations approached their “Baldrige journey” and what other health care leaders should do to reap similar benefits. To fully understand the journey for these nine organizations and their return on investment, the authors studied each of their 50-page award applications, presentations at national and regional meetings, and other publications by or about them. Additionally and most importantly, CEOs and other senior leaders were interviewed at length. The questions asked of these leaders followed three basic themes: How did you successfully use the Baldrige framework to drive improvement? What would you recommend other organizations do to gain the value you have from a Baldrige journey? What can we learn from you that would help other organizations manage their improvement journeys to maximize the value they gain? “Health reform is making it clear: healthcare organizations improving to great clinical, financial, and experience outcomes will win and thrive for the communities they serve. Yet research teaches us that most change fails. Journey to Excellence, through ‘brutal truth,’ inspirational storytelling, courageous journeys, disciplined research, and sustained results, shows us the way, the very hard way, as well as the awesome possibility.” Jim Conway, SVP, Institute for Healthcare Improvement “W. Edwards Deming spoke of consistent, business-driving quality as arising from ‘a system of production.’ At best, health care delivery in most places today is bubbling chaos. The Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award supplies the only practical, comprehensive outline for health care as a system of production in existence today. It’s about time that health care leaders had a comprehensive guide. Taught by experts, this volume is drawn from careful analysis of those who have succeeded. You hold the future in your hands – at least, for those who will not only survive, but thrive in the coming turmoil of health care reform.” Brent James, MD, Intermountain Health Care “Journey to Excellence is an insightful synthesis of the powerful Baldrige framework and the real life journeys of the healthcare award winners. Their stories will deepen understanding both for those new to and experienced with the Baldrige Criteria. This book is a major contribution to achieving healthcare excellence!” Louise Liang, MD, Former Chair, Institute for Healthcare Improvement “Most healthcare organizations are currently in a purely reactive mode – just struggling to get through the day and the fiscal year, collecting the data that they are required to report, and responding to crises. In Journey to Excellence, Goonan and her co-authors show healthcare leaders how to take control of the agenda. The Baldrige Criteria define the journey that can help organizations approach greatness, and the authors’ LASER set of behaviors describes what they need to ‘pack’ for the trip.” Tom Lee, MD, Network President, Partners Healthcare System “Journey to Excellence provides a concrete framework for leaders seeking to improve their organizational performance. Health care organizations are likely to face increasing pressure to improve quality and reduce cost in the coming years. Goonan, Muzikowski, and Stoltz offer a strategic roadmap for a successful transformational change. This book contains real life stories of leaders who used Baldrige to successfully transform their organizations into high performance enterprises.” Vinod K. FORENSIC LABORATORY MANAGEMENT. APPLYING BUSINESS PRINCIPLES
New technologies, including DNA and digital databases that can compare known and questioned exemplars, have transformed forensic science and greatly impacted the investigative process. They have also made the work more complicated. Obtaining proper resources to provide quality and timely forensic services is frequently a challenge for forensic managers, who are often promoted from casework duties and must now learn a whole new set of leadership skills. The interdisciplinary and scientific nature of laboratories requires strong leadership ability to manage complex issues, often in adversarial settings. Forensic Laboratory Management: Applying Business Principles provides laboratory managers with business tools that apply the best science to the best evidence in a manner that increases the efficiency and effectiveness of their management decision making. The authors present a performance model with seven recommendations to implement, illustrating how forensic managers can serve as leaders and strategically improve the operation and management in scientific laboratories. Topics include: Key business metrics and cost–benefit analyses Ethical lapses: why they occur, possible motives, and how problems can be prevented Forensic training, education, and institutes ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation implementation The book includes case studies simulating a working laboratory in which readers can apply business tools with actual data reinforcing discussion concepts. Each chapter also includes a brief review of current literature of the best management theories and practice. A supplemental DVD supplies two mock trial transcripts and associated case files along with PowerPoint® slides from Dr. George Carmody’s workshop on Forensic DNA Statistics and Dr. Doug Lucas’s presentation on ethics.
ASQ/ANSI G1:2021 GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATING THE QUALITY OF GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND SERVICES
ASQ/ANSI G1:2021 standard promotes the achievement of overall organizational objectives through the definition of all important organizational workflows, and the documentation of these best-known management practices for each key workflow through system and process modeling. This evaluation standard provides a framework for government entities to achieve success through continual improvement of the key drivers of that success, by using acknowledged successful practices of lean and quality improvement. Specifically, the goals of the standard are: 1) to make the presence of quality in government measurable and tangible in every office, branch, and unit. 2) to promote alignment to the required and desired objectives of each organization. 3) to advance effective management through systems thinking and process standardization. 4) to enable uniform assessment across all types of government, and at all levels. 5) to incentivize those accountable for organizational outcomes to use and monitor quality management practice.

ROAD MAP FOR THE BALDRIGE JOURNEY (E-BOOK). A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE USE OF THE CRITERIA FOR PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE AND BALDRIGE-BASED AWARD PROGRAMS
While the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence are one of the most widely known assessment frameworks in the world, interest in the Criteria has ebbed and flowed over the years. In part this may be due to the fact that applicants are often on their own when it comes to determining how to use the Criteria and award programs in an efficient and effective manner. This difficulty is somewhat by design, since the Criteria are non-prescriptive. The requirements are presented as more than 200 questions written in a generic manner to enable their application by all types of organizations. They do not tell leaders what to do to meet the requirements, which is both good and bad. While it allows organizations to develop processes to respond to the Criteria in ways that meet their unique needs, this has created a barrier for some leaders. This book provides a detailed road map and systematic process to design and implement a customized operating model for performance excellence based on the Criteria. The road map includes regular use of state award programs for feedback to enable mid-course correction. Though recognition is not its primary purpose, following this road map also increases the likelihood of being recognized by these award programs. The approach presented here will not guarantee an award, but it will help an organization’s leaders use the Criteria and award programs more efficiently and effectively as an aid to organizational transformation and improvement. "It is true, organizations are perfectly designed to get the results they are getting. The Baldrige framework is an operating model that guides organizations to establish key processes that are proven to yield high reliability. The framework, however, can be intimidating. Kilbride’s Road Map clearly explains and provides ‘doable’ steps to apply the Baldrige Criteria and become more process-honoring. It is a compilation of the valuable education, guidance, and support Joe provided us on our journey."David Fox, President and Pattie Skriba, VP Business ExcellenceAdvocate Good Samaritan Hospital2010 Baldrige Award Recipient "The Baldrige journey of continuous improvement never ends. For such a journey you need a knowledgeable co-pilot, and Joe Kilbride has helped many organizations, examiners, judges and others pursuing excellence to navigate that journey. His expertise is priceless and the Road Map makes him your virtual co-pilot. I hope you will take the first step today; excellence awaits."Bob BarnettRetired CEO, Motorola CGISS2002 Baldrige Award Recipient "Surviving the challenges of today's global competition requires having a long-term plan... and a road map to get there. Here is the essential companion for a successful journey."David BoulayPresidentIllinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC)
PRODUCT SAFETY EXCELLENCE. THE SEVEN ELEMENTS ESSENTIAL FOR PRODUCT LIABILITY PREVENTION
Product safety problems really waste company resources, alienate consumers, frustrate employees, and leave company stakeholders disgusted. It is easy to understand why most consumer product companies are committed to product safety and why they often seem willing to devote even more resources to increase their organization’s safety commitment. Their logic seems to be that this kind of action will result in higher levels of safety performance. Achieving excellence in product safety is not about seeking more commitment. It is all about understanding what to do and how to do it using the fine organization one already has. Product Safety Excellence defines the seven vital elements that are essential to achieving state-of-the-art product safety performance with the benefits of product liability prevention, product quality improvement, and higher levels of consumer trust and loyalty. This book is appropriate for anyone interested in understanding the concepts underlying product safety excellence. It should especially be read by management and technical personnel with a responsibility and/or desire for eliminating product safety problems and improving profitability and consumer loyalty.
COACHING GREEN BELTS FOR SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS (E-BOOK)
Six Sigma Green Belts need support in applying new skills after training, yet there is little research about how this works and even less advice about what support looks like in the field. This book is that missing link in providing coaching tips to support Green Belt projects. There is an abundant amount of information on the technical, “hard skills” aspects of Six Sigma, while considerably less about the interpersonal side of DMAIC. Research has shown that desirable Green Belt project outcomes are greatly influenced by collaboration issues between the coach and the Green Belt team member, and therefore this text focuses on tips for effective collaboration practices. Besides being a comprehensive discussion about how to coach Green Belts on their first project, it may also be used to coach subsequent Green Belt projects. A case study of Louisville Metro demonstrates this book’s ideas in the field and includes an example of one of its actual Six Sigma Green Belt projects.
